Closing Out French Month & Virtual Wine Tasting

As October is coming to a close, we are rounding out French Month with another week of delicious wines. Did you know that we also have a weekly wine tasting virtually on our Facebook page in addition to our weekly wine recommendations here on the Blog?

That's right, every Friday at 5 pm, Travis goes live on our Facebook page for a virtual wine tasting we like to call…

"Hey, What's That Guy Drinking."

Travis+Tasting+%281%29.jpg

This Friday we are visiting the south of France and tasting from the following wines:

  1. L'Enclos Cotes de Gascogne - Blend of Colombar & Ugni Blanc | $11

  2. Jean Pierre Gaussen - Little country blend from top Bandol producer | $17

  3. Les Capucins - Delicious Languedoc blend of Syrah & Grenache | $14

Wines from this area are notorious for over-delivering, and these are no exception. Stop by to pick up your wines ahead of time, and then join us Friday at 5 pm on our Facebook for a little fun. We promise it's better than the rest of your feed.

And now for our weekly recommendations.

Staff Picks

Schaller Chablis Premier Cru Vau De Vey 2017, $39
Grapes: 100% Chardonnay

Tasting Notes: 90 Points! Aromas of citrus blossom, Meyer lemon and wheat toast, the Chablis 1er Cru Vau de Vey is medium to full-bodied, pretty with a fragrant core of fruit, racy acids and saline, delicately wood-toned finish.

2016 Chateau La Grace Dieu Les Menuts , $45
Grapes: Blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon

Tasting Notes: This classic Bordeaux family has been making top quality french reds since 1875. Balance, structure, complexity, elegance- this robust cold-weather wine has it all. Enjoy after decanting for several hours to let it open up and reveal its many beautiful layers. Enjoy now or age for up to 10 more years. Fantastic wine!

2017 Clos la Coutale Cahors , $18
Grapes: Blend of Malbec and Merlot

Tasting Notes: A hearty, dense red from France's southwest. Rich, dark, earthy, and spicy. Creating an intense wine that juggles elegant rusticity with everyday drinkability. Great with food pairings- we recommend enjoying it with a hearty stew or anything fried in duck fat.

Geek of the Week

2017 Stephane Tissot ‘Singulier’, $48
Grapes: 100% Trousseau

Tasting Notes: Trousseau is an indigenous grape variety from the Jura region of Eastern France and typically is a fun, light-bodied, fragrant, earthy red wine. This stellar bottle is produced by famed vintner Stephane Tissot, who is tending 80-year-old vines with biodynamic farming practices. I find this wine's palate to be delicious- if not a touch cerebral: Notes of tart raspberry, white pepper, white cherry, and intensely earthy and fragrant minerals. Yum.

French Month Continues

We've got another week of four delicious french wine recommendations for you to enjoy — great wines with distinct 'old world' styles.

french-month-wine-recommendations.jpg

Staff Picks

NV Louis de Grenelle ‘Platine’ Brut, $23
Grapes: Blend of Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay

Tasting Notes: A fresh, citrus-flavored wine with attractive fruitiness and a crisp texture. The Chenin Blanc gives this bottle of bubbles a subtle nutty complexity and a touch of fermented honey in the finish. This has been a Bottle Shop go-to sparkling wine for the last couple of years. Outstanding for the price!!

2016 Jean Pierre Gaussen Vin de Pays du Mont-Caume, $17
Grapes: Blend of Mourvedre, Grenache, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon

Tasting Notes: Jean-Pierre Gaussen makes rustic, soulful Provencal wines that impress with their depth, authenticity, and character. In addition to his highly touted Bandols, Gaussen also crafts this Vin de Pays – his "country" wine – by taking the traditional Bandol varietals, Mourvedre, Grenache and Syrah, and adding just a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep, meaty, peppery, and herbal, with black cherry, cassis, and violet aroma. Fine, integrated tannins and hints of sweet tobacco, and chewy red fruits.

2017 Domaine St. Croix ‘Le Founas’, $15
Grapes: Blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan

Tasting Notes: Great weekday wine! Blackcurrant, black cherries and floral scents on the nose followed by complex notes of prunes and dried fruit. The palate is soft with clean, rich berry fruit - a charming little red table wine from Southern France.

Geek of the Week

2017 Breton 'Trinch' Bourgueil, $27
Grapes: 100% Cabernet Franc

Tasting Notes: Catherine and Pierre Breton are consistently among our top French wine producers year after year. They make several stellar wines in the Loire region, producing Chinon and Bourgueil, as well as a bit of Vouvray, creating honest wines for both early consumption and more extended aging.

The Bretons first introduced biodynamic practices into their viticulture in 1994, just after receiving their organic certification in 1991. Over the years, they have helped elevate both farming practices and wine practices in a region that had historically been thought of as making 2nd tier table wine.

Recently, they started the three-year process of seeking biodynamic certification. They have become international icons for the natural wine movement in an area where the climate and soil can make organic viticulture difficult. This week we offer their Bourgueil "Trinch!" - a robust yet lively dark cherry red. On the nose, scents of orange peel, licorice and pine. Medium-bodied on the palate with elegant acidity and balanced tannins. Sweet-edged cherry notes, and still retains a nice bit of that classic cab-franc crunchy bell pepper funk. Excellent Fall weather wine!!

french-value-wines.jpg

Staff Picks

2019 Domaine du Vieil Orme Sauvignon Blanc, $14
Grapes: 100% Sauvignon Blanc

Tasting Notes: Domaine du Vieil is located in the Touraine appellation in the Loire Valley. We like recommending wines from Touraine because their Sauvignon Blancs are in a similar style to the famed region of Sancerre, but are often half the price! This is a great bottle of white, 25-year-old vines on sustainably farmed vineyards, nice straw color with green hues, fresh on the palate and dominated by lime and grapefruit. Classic.

2019 Cuvee Jean Paul Rouge, $11
Grapes: Blend of Grenache and Syrah

Tasting Notes: This is a straightforward, no-frills red that focuses on complexity and drinkability. Lovely autumnal aromas of baked fruit, subtle earthy structure, uncomplicated soft and fruity red table wine. A solid pick for $11!

2019 St. Cosme Cote du Rhone, $15
Grapes: 100% Syrah

Tasting Notes: Saint Cosme, located just north of the village of Gigondas, is the most ancient estate in the region. This chateau has been making stellar Rhone wine since the year 1416! This is a classic southern French Syrah, with a lovely bright and pure expression of the grape. Violets, black currants, and blueberry, and hints of smoked meats and earthy minerals. Medium-bodied and wonderfully balanced with fleshy ripe fruit and silky tannins. Drink now, or fit for aging.

Geek of the Week

2017 Domaine de Brin' Vendemia', $16
Grapes: Blend of Duras and Braucol

Tasting Notes: Organically grown and sustainably produced. Juicy dark blue and black fruit, earthy aromas, nice tannic structure, and surprisingly pleasant acidity. Enjoyable esoteric wine from Southwestern France!

Patio Updates

With the impending rain on its way, we wanted to make sure we've got you covered, literally. Travis was busy last week building a new cover for our patio so that you can still enjoy lunch and dinner with a glass of wine or beer safely covered from the elements. Cheers!

October is French Month

During October, we will be celebrating all the delicious wine that comes from France. You won't want to miss all the French we have for you this month. And we are kicking it off with a French Case of the Month!

This case features many of the Portland Bottle Shop's favorite French wines that we try to keep on the shelves year-round. Through these wines, you'll visit many of the country's classic regions, as well as a handful of great growing areas that are a bit more off the beaten path.

In October's Case of the Month, you get (1) sparkling, (3) whites, (1) rose, and (7) reds for $188. That's a saving of $46!

We hope you enjoy the selections!

Sparkling

(Jura) Jean Bourdy Cremant du Jura, $24
Grapes: 100% Chardonnay

Notes: The Bourdy family has been making the same wine in the same location in eastern France for over 400 years (!), and all of it is simply delicious. This sparkling bottle is remarkable for the price- lean, crisp, flavorful, with clean bubbles and a delightful yellow apple palate.

Whites

(Loire) 2019 Arnaud Lambert ‘Clos de Midi’ Saumur Blanc, $21
Grapes: 100% Chenin Blanc

Notes: Nice fruit-driven white from the Loire valley. Tangy green apple and tropical fruit notes, nice textured mouthfeel, zippy acidity.

(Savoie) 2019 Domaine de L’Idylle, $15
Grapes: 100% Jaquere

Notes: Easy going French white. Balanced minerality and acidity, solidly medium-bodied, stellar wine for everyday meals.

(Menetou-Salon, Pouilly-Fumé, and Sancerre) 2019 Patient Cottat ‘Le Grand Caillou’, $16
Grapes: 100% Sauvignon Blanc

Notes: The Cottat family has been making delicious wines in the Loire valley for almost 100 years. This bottle is a mix of Sauvignon Blanc grapes from the region - but at stylistically - you're getting a Sancerre for half the price! Flinty minerality, the fragrance of wet granite, and nice citrus zest in the finish.

Rose

(Pays d’Oc) 2019 Domaine Montrose Rose, $13
Grapes: Blend of Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah

Notes: This wine has an elegant balance of a round mouthfeel and freshness in the finish, red berries and lemon peel citrus.

Reds

(Montagne Saint-Emilion) 2015 Chateau de Grandchamp, $21
Grapes: Blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon

Notes: Rich and dense Merlot driven red from Bordeaux. The wine is aromatically intense and very well-balanced on the palate with clean fruit flavors, nice structure, and a mineral finish.

(Vacqueyras) 2018 Domaine Burle Vacqueyras, $21
Grapes: Blend of Grenache and Syrah

Notes: Phenomenally unique red from the Cote du Rhone. This wine is masculine in character- bold, intensely structured, funky fragrances. Rich, dark fruited, and spicy.

(Cahors) 2016 Chateau Pineraie Cahors, $16
Grapes: 100% Malbec

Notes: Intense berry fruit with plum, blackberry and lots of spice. Generous potpourri fragrance adds a fun complexity, which is balanced by gentle tannins.

(Brouilly) 2018 Chateau Thivin ‘Reverdon’, $30
Grapes: 100% Gamay

Notes: Lush red and blue fruit tones, forest herbs, and a touch of old world funk. A great wine to pair with roasted poultry or pork chops!

(Cotes du Rhone) 2017 Chateau de Saint Cosme ‘Les Deux Albion’, $21
Grapes: Blend of Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Clairette

Notes: Château de Saint Cosme is the leading estate of Gigondas and produces the appellation's benchmark wines. The property has been in the hands of the Barruol family since 1570. The wine combines depth, structure, and finesses with roasted meats, olive, crushed plum, and black currants with aroma and flavors.

(Saumur) 2018 Melaric ‘Tandem’, $20
Grapes: Blend of Cabernet Franc and Grolleau

Notes: Organic and biodynamic farming. This is bright and earthy table wine, with some pepper, vivid raspberry, sour cherry and cranberry – crisp, fresh and super clean on the palate.

Grapes: Blend of Duras and Braucol

Notes: Juicy dark blue and black fruit, earthy aromas, excellent tannic structure, and surprisingly pleasant acidity. Enjoyable esoteric wine from Northeastern France!!

2016 Tornatore Etna Rosso, $32
Grapes: Nerello Mascalese

Notes: One of the best Italian wines we have tried in the past couple of years, from a classic producer from Mount Etna in Sicily. Last Call for the Caprese, Plus More Tasty Wines

With all of the wildfires ravaging Oregon and along the West Coast, it has been a somber week. Our thoughts are with the folks working hard fighting the fires and those who've had to evacuate or experienced damage and loss. The rain can't come fast enough!

PBS-Caprese-Sandwich-Portland-Oregon.png

Last Call for the Caprese!

Unfortunately, the tomato season will come to an end as we head into fall, which means we will be changing up the menu. So be sure to grab a delicious PBS Caprese while it's available.

Our Caprese is much like us, a little different. We have the traditional Mozzarella and delicious vine-ripened tomatoes, and then we add our house olive tapenade and spinach. As if that wasn't enough, we drizzle it with basil oil and a little balsamic reduction before toasting it up to perfection. So delicious!!

Come by and grab one, your belly will thank you!

2019 Franchere ‘Cascadia’ Red Blend, $21

Their motto says it all, 'unique blends, alternative varieties, and minimal intervention.' The Cascadia red blend is sustainably farmed, naturally fermented with zero oak, unfined, and so so so tasty. This wine smells like fresh-squeezed blood orange juice and blueberry muffin baking spices. It shows cracked black pepper and boysenberry on the palate and finishes with a slightly silky texture.
