White Wines for Spring

We are excited to present a handful of new white wine arrivals that are a bit 'off the beaten path' this week. Read on for details on a super fun blend from Slovenia and two tasty bottles from Austria.

All three would be delightful to enjoy in the Springtime sunshine!

 2019 Jarenincan Crnko Stajerska Slovenian White Blend (1 Liter), $21Grapes: Blend of Laški Rizling (Welschriesling), Sauvignon Blanc, and Rizvanec (Müller­-Thurgau)

Tasting Notes: From the continental, alpine-influenced climate of northern Slovenia, bottled in a party-ready liter bottle!

You will love this wine's fresh aromatics, zippy acidity, touch o' tropical fruit and low alcohol. It's the perfect white for porch pounding in the Spring sun. Surprisingly tasty!!

2019 Johannes Trapl ‘Carnuntum Weiss’, $21
Grapes: Blend of Gruner Veltliner, Weissburgunder, and Welschriesling

Tasting Notes: Fun bottle of Austrian white! This blend shows a bright yellow-green color and forward notes of citrus, wild blossom honey and hazelnut.

Nicely textured and balanced, with a lush mouthfeel. Pairs perfectly with fish, seafood or light pasta dishes.

2017 Judith Beck Burgenland White, $16
Grapes: 100% Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc)

Tasting Notes: Organic, sustainably farmed, vegan Austrian wine from one of our favorite 'new school' European winemakers, Judith Beck. This is her entry-level white and well outperforms the price tag.

This bottle is lively and fresh, fruit forward with prominent yellow fruit tones and balanced acidity, and just a touch dry. This would be a stellar accompaniment with a creamy pasta dish or roasted and herbed chicken. So good!

New Arrivals from Celler Pardas

This week we are highlighting a couple of new arrivals from Celler Pardas. Located in the Penedes region of Catalonia in Spain, the vintners started the Pardas project in 1996 and have been making tasty organic, biodynamic, and sustainably farmed wines since. 

We just received a fantastic white blend of indigenous grapes and a very cool red blend made of traditionally French varietals. Read on for details below, and we hope to see you down at the shop picking up a bottle soon. Cheers!

The Wines

2019 Pardas ‘Rupestris’ Blanco, $18
Grapes: Blend of Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Malvasia

Tasting Notes: Medium-bodied, tangy green apple with lush citrus and crisp acidity. The Malvasia imparts a pleasantly tropical and floral aromatic quality to the wine. Great sippable white, great for pairing with snacks and lighter fare.  

2015 Pardas Negra Tinto, $23
Grapes: Blend of Cabernet Franc, Sumoll, and Cabernet Sauvignon

Tasting Notes: Medium/Full-bodied, lovely dense plum, black licorice, and black cacao. This is a fun and warm red with surprisingly elegant tones of minerality and integrated tannins. This would be a great bottle to enjoy with roasted sausages and veggies. 

March Case of the Month

More new arrivals and staff picks this month! With spring on the horizon, we have included some fun wines to enjoy in the sun and many tasty offerings that will be perfect for food pairings. 

Of particular note is a standout bottle of sparkling rose from Ricochet Wines, a superb white blend from the Penedes region in Spain, and a great new Reserve Pinot release from the Patricia Greene Winery here in the Willamette Valley.

Sparkling

(Oregon) ‘Le Ressort’ Ricochet Pet Nat Sparkling Rose
Grapes: Blend of Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir

Notes: What is a ‘Pet Nat,’ you may be wondering? It is an approach to making sparkling wine where the wine is bottled before fully completing its first fermentation. This allows carbon dioxide to be produced by the natural sugars found in the grapes. The end product is a bottle of outstanding pink bubbles- offering soft, vibrant effervescence with notes of strawberry, kiwi, apricot, and sea salt. 

Rose

(France) Domaine Salvard Cheverny Rose
Grapes: Blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay

Notes: This bottle of rose is a spring-time straight-shooter: exquisitely balanced with bright tart red fruit, subtle soft mouth texture, and crisp lemony acidity in the finish. 

Whites

(Spain) 2018 Garcia Revalo ‘Finca Tresolmos’
Grapes: 100% Verdejo

Notes: Great food-friendly Spanish white. Medium-bodied with lime zest, pear, and a nice mineral finish. 

(Spain) 2019 Pardas ‘Rupestris’ Bianco
Grapes: Blend of Xarello, Malvasia, and Macabeo

Notes: One of our favorite new arrivals this month! Another super cool Spanish white. Biodynamic and sustainably farmed. Tangy green apple, tropical floral notes, racy acidity- so tasty! 

(Oregon) 2018 Eyrie Vineyards WV Pinot Gris
Grapes: 100% Pinot Gris

Notes: Classic local producer from the Willamette Valley. This white is a more decadent, rounder style, with ripe passion fruit, almond, and green strawberry. Pair with grilled chicken over alfredo pasta!

(Italy) 2019 Harper Voit Vineyards WV Pinot Blanc
Grapes: 100% Pinot Bianco

Notes: One more standout new arrival! Subtle vanilla texture with yellow apple on the palate, crisp, balanced citrus on the finish. 

Reds

(Oregon) 2019 Patricia Green Cellars Reserve Pinot Noir
Grapes:100% Pinot Noir

Notes: A blend of their best grapes from both the Ribbon Ridge and Dundee Hills AVA. This pinot has a lovely prominent earthy structure with forest floor herbs and lush red and blue fruit tones. 

(Italy) 2019 Francesco Brigatti ‘Maria’ Colline Novaresi
Grapes: 100% Vespolina

Notes: Very unique, light/medium-bodied red from the upper hills of Piedmonte, Italy. This wine has amazingly herbaceous aromas, with tart red fruit and spicy black pepper. This one is super fun to enjoy on its own or a killer pairing with a board of Italian cured meats and semi-hard salty cheeses. 

(France) 2018 Domaine Guion Bourgueil
Grapes: 100% Cabernet Franc

Notes: Fun and lively medium-bodied red from the Loire Valley in France. Pluot and blueberry upfront, with green bell pepper and cedar on the finish. Yum. 

(Spain) 2019 Bozeto de Exopto Vino Tinto
Grapes: Blend of Garnatxa, Tempranillo, and Carinena 

Notes: A mix of old vines from Rioja, Spain. The grapes are fermented in concrete, then aged in barrel. The resulting wine is a lovely mix of prominent fresh berry and fleshy plum fruit, with a nice density and wooded structure. Great casual drinking red, and perfect for weekday food pairing! 

(Argentina) 2018 Uco Valley Tinto Negro
Grapes: 100% Malbec

Notes: Full-bodied and dense South American red. Concentrated blue and black fruit, with inky purple tannic density. This wine screams for a burger!

(Washington) 2016 Sharecropper’s Merlot
Grapes: 100% Merlot

Notes: Sharecropper is the ‘day to day’ wine label from a noteworthy local producer, Owen Roe. They have become a bottle shop staple over the years, and we always carry at least a few of their offerings. Their Merlot is surprisingly delicious! Well balanced with nice earthy and dusty tannins, cracked black pepper, and plenty of blackberry fruit. 

New Vintage Releases


This week we have a few new vintage releases! We just brought in a tasty White Pinot Noir from here in the Willamette Valley and a couple of great cold-weather reds from Spain and France. Read on for details below - We hope you enjoy!

2019 Amity Vineyards White Pinot Noir, $19
Grapes:100% White Pinot Noir

Tasting Notes: Very cool project from here in the Willamette Valley! To make this white wine, they hand-pick their pinot noir grapes about a week earlier than they would pick their red wines to preserve acidity. Then they are whole bunched pressed very gently, which allows the juice to minimize maceration and have little color pick-up.

All of the color and most of the tannin in red wine comes from the skin. So, if you press right away and very lightly, you can extract the clear juice. This creates a beautifully light-in-color white wine with red wine characteristics. And the result is surprisingly delicious! Excellent cold weather white, nice mouth texture, citrus blossom aromatics, and forward pear, honeydew, and tart white raspberry. So good!

Grapes:Blend of Garnacha, Graciano, and Tempranillo

Tasting Notes: A mix of old vines from Rioja, Spain. The grapes are fermented in concrete, then aged in barrel. The resulting wine is a lovely mix of prominent fresh berry and fleshy plum fruit, with a nice density and wooded structure. Great casual drinking red, and perfect for weekday food pairing! 

2019 Domaine Melody Crozes-Hermitage, $22
Grapes:100% Syrah

Tasting Notes: Great cold weather red from the Rhone Valley in France. Dark blue and black fruit, licorice and leather aromas, smooth tannins and a touch of bacon fat on the finish. Stellar burger or steak wine!

New Red Wines

Over the last few weeks, we have been doing research to replace many of our old favorite wines with new tasty and fun options. This week we are featuring more wines that have just arrived in the shop.

There is a fantastic 100% Gamay from Cru terroir in Moulin-A-Vent, as well as a couple of excellent value reds from Northern and Southern Italy. We hope you enjoy!

2019 Filippo Cassano CALX Primitivo, $16
Grapes: 100% Primitivo

Tasting Notes: A very fun, everyday table red from Puglia, which is the heel of the boot of Southern Italy. This bottle is 100% Primitivo, which is what Italians call Zinfandel. Whereas Zinfandel is typically a full-bodied and robust red, this Primitivo is considerably light on its feet. This is a fresh, drinkable red wine with zingy flavors of red berries, figs, and forest herbs. Fantastic bottle for under $20!

2017 Montaribaldi ‘Ternus’ Langhe Rosso, $16
Grapes: Blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto

Tasting Notes: A very cool red blend from the hills of Barbaresco in Piedmont, Italy. Earthy aromas with a soft tannic structure and a little dark chocolate in the finish. Great 'classic Italian' table red, super food-friendly, and very approachable at $16. Boom.

2018 Domaine Lardy ’Les Michelons’ Cru Moulin-A-Vent, $27
Grapes: 100% Gamay

Tasting Notes: Old vines at the top of the Moulin-à-Vent slope in Beaujolais, France, give this wine its rich, plump structure. The fruit is fresh and crisp, with a smoky character from old-barrel wood aging. Absolutely outstanding, food-friendly, winter red.

February Case of the Month

We are very excited to offer this month's case! There have been quite a bit of new arrivals to the shop over the last few weeks. So this month's case is featuring several of those, as well as a handful of staff favorites. Standout selections include a stellar Sparkling Rose from one of our favorite Loire producers, a super tasty Italian red made from a Sicilian grape called 'Susumaniello,' and a surprisingly delicious Cab Sauv from Willful Winery in Walla Walla. (France) Arnaud Lambert Breze Cremant de Loire Sparkling Rose, $21
Grapes: Blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon

Notes: A fantastic $20 bottle of French bubbles from one of our favorite producers. Ripe tart strawberry, nice broad mouthfeel with a zippy finish, lemon zest aromatics. Yum.

Whites

(France) 2016 E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone Blanc, $14
Grapes: Blend of Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Grenache Blanc.

Notes: White flowers and apricot, with forward fresh fruits on the palate, balanced richness and body. 

(Italy) 2019 Dorigo Vignaioli in Friuli Bianco $19
Grapes: 100% Pinot Grigio

Notes: Aroma of green apple and almond follow over bright acidity gives a crisp, tangy close. 

(Oregon) 2019 McBeth Vineyards Pinot Gris $18
Grapes: 100% Pinot Gris

Notes: Fresh acidity with pear, white peach flavors, with aromas of honey crisp. Super tasty small-batch, local producer!

(Italy) 2019 Cora Alto Adige Vino Bianco $18
Grapes: 100% Pinot Bianco

Notes: Underripe stonefruit, tangy and a touch savory. Medium-bodied with pear and ginger palate- very cool new arrival Italian white table wine!

Reds

(Spain) 2016 Autocon Celler Tinto $20
Grapes: 100% Sumoll

Notes: Earthy and spicy Spanish red with wild berries, big savory flavors and crunchy tannins. A very fun structure!

(Italy) 2018 Ca’ del Baio Langhe Nebbiolo, $21
Grapes: 100% Nebbiolo

Notes: Ca' del Baio is one of the more remarkable, underrated producers in Barbaresco. The wines routinely deliver stellar quality for the price. Fragrant dried flowers and slight fruity overtones of raspberries. A great Italian red that is dry, warm and soft, slightly tannic and very easy to drink.

(Spain) 2016 Lopez de Haro Crianza, $13
Grapes: Blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano

Notes: Smoky on the nose with sweet cherry aromas. Dry, with roasted cherry, red berries, tobacco leaf flavors vibrant on the palate.

(Washington) 2017 Willful Wines Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon, $38
Grapes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Notes: The wine has firm tannins balanced with lush blackcurrant fruit flavors, yet surprisingly balanced with a more restrained, elegant structure. Surprisingly tasty Walla Walla red that screams for a plate of steak and potatoes. 

(Italy) 2018 Villa Medoro Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, $12
Grapes: 100% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

Notes: A well-balanced expressive red wine, aged in steel tanks for 18 months. Aromas and flavors of spiced violets, blueberries and pepper. Fresh and balanced Italian red table wine. 

(France) 2018 Mas d’Intras Cuvee des Helviens, $15
Grapes: Blend of Grenache, Merlot, and Syrah

Notes: This is a red wine relatively light and fruity that nevertheless has character. Spicy and easy to drink, it is suitable for daily savoring—excellent wine pairing with everyday dinner meals. 

(Italy) 2019 Masseria Li Veli, Salento Susumaniello Askos, $21
Grapes: 100% Susumaniello

Notes: Super tasty Sicilian red new arrival! Berries, licorice and leather on the nose. Soft, elegant and balanced with full integrated tannins. So good!

This week we are featuring some cool new natural wine arrivals. These three bottles check all of the boxes: Organic, Biodynamic, Unfiltered, Unfined (vegan), and fermented with Natural Yeast. Sustainably farmed and tasty selections!

2019 Domaine A. Pegaz Beaujolais Blanc, $20
Grapes: 100% Chardonnay

Tasting Notes: Medium-bodied, nice mouth weight, yellow pear, balanced with soft acidity, a subtle minerality, and very food-friendly. This would pair nicely with cream of potato soup or a bowl of risotto. Stellar white burgundy for the price!

2019 Franchere ‘Cascadia Red’, $21
Grapes: Blend of Pinot Noir, Syrah, Gruner Veltliner, Gamay

Tasting Notes: A very cool red blend from a local experimental winemaker, Mike Hinds. Mostly Pinot noir, with small percentages of both red and white wine (!). This wine has a little bit of that ‘natural funkiness’ to it, in a good way- it’s a touch cloudy, has subtle aromas of ‘barnyard’ on the nose, yet is incredibly fun on the palate. Bright tart fruit, zippy acidity, a touch of grippy texture in the finish- absolutely delish! This wine definitely falls into the ‘interesting and delicious’ category!

2018 Domaine Baron De L’ecluse Cote De Brouilly, $23
Grapes: 100% Gamay

Tasting Notes: Another standout natural French red wine from Beaujolais this week! Beautifully layered structure, bright raspberry and blueberry notes, pleasantly floral aromas, forest herbs and a touch of cocoa in the finish. Superb!

This week we are featuring wines that are perfect for cold weather. The trio of recommendations is all richer textured. It has prominent depth on the palate, perfectly suited for pairing with wintery meal fare.

2017 Roco 'Gravel Road' Willamette Valley Chardonnay, $32
Grapes: 100% Chardonnay

Tasting Notes: Located in the Chehalem Mountains AVA, this Roco Winery Chardonnay sources grapes from its three best growing sites. Full-bodied yet fresh on the palate, the 'Gravel Road' is a super tasty and well balanced winter white. Fresh pear with tangerine aromatics, finishing with pleasant notes of toasty hazelnuts and Myer lemon. Perfect for a hearty chicken stew. 

2017 Domaine Berthet-Rayne Cotes Du Rhone, $16
Grapes: Blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, and Cinsault

Tasting Notes: Old vines, organic farming, and situated on some of the finest terroir *just* outside of Chateauneuf du Pape in Southern France. Châteauneuf-like aromas of wild cherries and leather, followed by an elegant mid palate of warm kitchen spices, finishing with that classic Rhone dark fruit and tobacco. Absolutely superb for the price!

2018 Ritme Celler Priorat Tinto, $24
Grapes: Blend of Carignan and Garnatxa

Tasting Notes: Old vines and a sustainably farmed red blend from the region of Priorat in North Eastern Spain. This is a super fun winter red; nice density with solidly blue fruit tones, balanced, if not a bit punchy acidity, tangy and spicy in the finish. The Ritme Celler Tinto is a fantastic bottle with food pairings! Try this with roasts, stews, and red meat sauces. Delicious.
